At the same time, the push towards <strong>digital innovation<\/strong> opens new possibilities to make the <strong>energy system more efficient, flexible, and secure.<\/strong> In this context, the <strong>twin green and digital transition <\/strong>promoted by the European Union, aims to build a more resilient, sustainable, and technologically advanced future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This vision is outlined in the Joint Research Centre \u2014 JRC\u2019s report <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/repository\/handle\/JRC129319\"><em>Towards a green and digital future<\/em><\/a>, which highlights how sustainable digital technologies can enable a carbon-neutral EU by 2050 and identifies key conditions for the success of both transitions. The report also served as the foundation for the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/document\/f8f67d33-194c-4c89-a4a6-795980a1dabd_en\"><em>2023 Strategic Foresight Report,<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>building on the objectives of the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal_en\"><strong><em>European Green Deal<\/em><\/strong><\/a> to explore long-term pathways for a fair and sustainable Europe. <sup id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000d7c0000000000000000_4560-1\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000d7c0000000000000000_4560\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000d7c0000000000000000_4560-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Joint Research Centre (2022). <em>The twin green &amp; digital transition: How sustainable digital technologies could enable a carbon-neutral EU by 2050<\/em>. The infrastructure behind AI, particularly data centres, requires large amounts of electricity, often still generated from fossil fuels, and consumes vast quantities of water for cooling. Moreover, the production of AI hardware depends on critical minerals and rare earth elements, whose extraction can have serious ecological impacts. <sup id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000d7c0000000000000000_4560-9\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000d7c0000000000000000_4560\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000d7c0000000000000000_4560-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"9\">United Nations Environment Programme (2024). <em>AI has an environmental problem. Thanks to its geographical position and natural resources, the island stands out for its ability to <strong>produce energy from renewable sources<\/strong>, particularly solar and wind. At the heart of regional policies is <strong>digitalisation<\/strong>, seen as a lever to enable a low-cost, high-efficiency energy model based on local renewable sources. One of the most significant is related to <strong>security<\/strong>: digitalising the grids exposes the energy system to increasing risks of cyberattacks, with potential impacts on critical infrastructure and service continuity.
