The European Union, with its diverse geography and climate conditions, faces significant threats from natural disasters, particularly wildfires, floods, and extreme weather events. Climate change has intensified these emergencies, necessitating advanced training for firefighters to improve their response capabilities.
The ENSURE project recognizes the crucial role of emergency responders, who not only manage crises but also contribute to disaster preparedness, community education, and long-term resilience strategies. Technological innovations, such as drones, augmented reality (AR), and risk management information systems, offer new possibilities for disaster response. However, their effective use requires specialized skills that many responders currently lack. Furthermore, the transnational nature of climate-induced disasters highlights the need for cross-border cooperation and shared best practices. Additionally, the psychological well-being of emergency responders is a growing concern, emphasizing the need for mental health and resilience training. Lastly, stronger community engagement is essential to improve disaster preparedness at the local level.
We are proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative aimed at upskilling emergency responders to tackle the growing challenges posed by climate change-related disasters. On February 20-21, 2025, we participated in the project’s kick-off meeting in Patras (Greece) where partners from across Europe convened to discuss strategies for equipping firefighters with the necessary competencies to enhance disaster response and resilience.
ENSURE envisions a future where EU firefighters and communities are not only prepared for disasters but also equipped with the latest skills, tools, and knowledge to mitigate their impact. The project aims to enhance immediate response capabilities while fostering long-term resilience, collaboration, and innovation in disaster management.
By aligning with the ESCO 5411.1 profile, ENSURE will introduce four new sub-profiles to better address the evolving demands of firefighting:
- Disaster Response Technologist (DRT) – Specializing in advanced firefighting technology.
- International Disaster Response Coordinator (IDRC) – Managing cross-border emergency operations.
- Community Resilience and Engagement Officer (CREO) – Fostering community preparedness.
- Mental Health and Resilience Trainer for Emergency Services (MHRTES) – Addressing psychological resilience among first responders.
The ENSURE project aims to modernize the ESCO profile of emergency responders by designing and testing practical training programs that simulate real emergency scenarios.
To this end, we invite all stakeholders, including fire organizations, emergency response agencies, policymakers, training institutes, and local communities, to join us in shaping the future of disaster management.
